Science Calls It Role Engulfment #specialneedsparenting #caregivingparents #invisiblegrief

When a caregiver's identity becomes so consumed by the caregiving role that their individual self effectively disappears, researchers call it role engulfment. It is not a metaphor. It is a documented process in which the demands of caring for another person gradually displace everything else — personal goals, desires, relationships, sense of self — until the function is all that remains.
What makes it particularly insidious for caregiving parents is that the erasure is socially rewarded. Wanting something for yourself gets read as selfishness. Having a goal unrelated to your child gets read as misplaced priorities. The complete subordination of your personhood to your caregiving role gets called devotion.
The science does not call it devotion. It calls it a risk factor.
