I Built a Guitar With One Hand (the other one was in a cast) - CUSTOM TELE BUILD - ALL HAND TOOLS
Due to a wrist injury in October, I spent 8 weeks with a cast around my wrist and forearm. After two weeks without playing any instrument or building anything, I decided I’d try and make a guitar from scratch, using only one hand and using only hand tools. Lucky for me I’m right handed.
I got the cast changed two times over the course of 2 months because my forearm kept shrinking and my wrist started moving again (I wasn’t supposed to be able to rotate my wrist in any direction), hence the color changing. This build took me 6 weeks to achieve, working mostly in the evening after work and on weekends.
The cast was removed on December 2nd, I’m currently undergoing physiotherapy and hopefully I’ll be able to hold a guitar again sometime soon. As for the Shelf Guitar build, this was a form of therapy for me.
If it doesn’t show in the video, this was actually a very fun build, I caught myself laughing out loud alone in the workshop on multiple occasions.
Some disclaimers:
- I did use a power drill, because I couldn’t figure out a way to use my hand brace drill safely with just one hand, whether the power drill is considered a hand tool or not is up to you
- The only other time I used electricity in this build was to power the soldering iron. If you want to be picky, yes, I also did use electricity to light up the workshop, some may call that cheating, but I found it more convenient
- I could have used a hand router if I had one but they're all out of stock in Europe (I've been lurking on Veritas miniature planes for ages), so instead I went full Paul Sellers on that truss rod channel !
- I did need some help to mill the timber before the build even started, I didn’t show the process because after 4 building videos, I’m slowly realizing that no one cares about that part !
- You can see me use my second hand on a few shots, that was done safely as it didn’t involve wrist rotations
No specs sheet this time, literally everything is in the video :)
Next video is probably a tutorial on how to make this guitar (I shot dozens of extra footages, just need to edit and comment them).
I don’t know what I’m gonna build next, but you’ll find out on my instagram @tchiksguitars
Thanks for watching !
And stay safe !
