Top 5 Outdoor Places in MoCo

Feel free to comment below if you have any places you would have added to this list or any honorable mentions. Here are my Top 5 Outdoor Places in MoCo in no specific order.

1. ⛰️ Sugarloaf Mountain in Dickerson, Maryland is open all year and is the perfect location for hiking and rock climbing. There are three well marked trails to check out. The most popular trail is the 4.5 mile Blue trail. One other side note is the scenic Sugarloaf Winery is located less than a mile from the base of Sugarloaf Mountain. Enjoy a bottle of wine after your hike is finished.

2. 🏞️ Great Falls in Potomac, Maryland- You will love the tow path that runs between the Potomac River and the C&O Canal. It's perfect for walking, biking, hiking, fishing and kayaking. Check out the 4.5 mile Billy Goat Trail which runs parallel to the Potomac River. There are amazing scenic views of the Potomac River and the state of Virginia on the other side of the river.

3. 🍓 Butlers Orchard in Germantown, Maryland is a definite Montgomery County destination point. It's a 280 acre working farm. People come from far and near to pick their own berries and apples in the spring and summer. In the Fall you can pick your own pumpkins, take part in a hayride or one of their festivals. In the winter you are able to harvest your own Christmas tree. Additionally, Butlers Orchard has a nicely stocked General store where you can pick up fresh produce, preserves as well as baked goods. You don't want to miss Butler's Orchard.

4. ⚽ South Germantown Park, Germantown, Maryland- South Germantown Park is best known as the home of the Maryland Soccer Plex. Beyond a myriad of soccer and lacrosse fields there are also cricket fields, baseball fields, splash park, aquatic center, indoor and outdoor tennis complex, golf range, mini-golf, bike trails, walking paths, ponds and more. If your kids are into soccer and lacrosse there's no doubt you will be spending a lot of time at South Germantown Park.

5. 🚣‍♂️ Black Hills Regional Park, Boyds, Maryland- Black Hill is home to Little Lake Seneca which actually isn't that little. The park offers boat rentals and also has a boat launch to launch your own boat. Since the lake is an actual reservoir for drinking water to families in the upper part of Montgomery County only boats propelled by electric engines are allowed. Gas powered motors are not permitted. The lake is gorgeous and is known for its trophy sized Largemouth Bass. The picture of the fish in this video was caught by my daughter Kristen. It was an awesome 4 pond bass she caught from the shore. Beyond the lake there are bike and walking paths, picnic areas with grills, playgrounds, beach volley ball courts and a dog park. You will love Black Hills Regional Park.
