Meteora; Suspended monasteries, Kalambaka, Greece

Rocky area near Kalambaka town in Meteora, Greece. There are many Orthodox churches and the most important monasteries in Greece in the area. Of the 24 monasteries, 6 of them have survived, and the monasteries were built on the huge natural pillars that dominate the region. Meteora is located in the northwest of the Thessalia plain, near the Pinios River and the Pindus Mountains.

UNESCO included the area on the world heritage list in 1988.
