Do Retainers Hurt

When you’re done with braces, you’ll wear a retainer to keep your healthy new smile in place. Many patients wonder about retainers: will they hurt?

In this video, Diamond Braces Chief Clinical Officer and Orthodontist Dr. Oleg Drut answers your questions about retainers and whether they hurt.

As Dr. Drut explains, there are three parts of orthodontic care:

- Diagnostic
- Treatment
- Retention

The retention phase is when you’ll wear retainers: this is the final appliance that will keep your smile intact, by preventing the teeth from shifting back to their original locations. Retainers are necessary: without the retainers, your teeth will likely move out of their correct, healthy positions. All braces patients will need some form of retainer appliance.

There are several forms of retainers: many patients will get a permanently bonded retainer, which goes on the bottom row of teeth and stays in place permanently after braces treatment. Others will wear a nighttime retainer, made of either metal or clear plastic aligners that are worn every night while you sleep.

Retainers do not hurt: they are molded specifically to fit your teeth and mouth. However, much like braces, your teeth may need time to adjust to the feeling of the retainers. There may be soreness or discomfort when you first wear the retainer. You can take some over-the-counter pain medication for any pain, or suck on an ice cube to soothe the discomfort. Your mouth and teeth will quickly adjust to the new appliance.
