Why Escape Doesn’t Exit the Dimension Tool in SOLIDWORKS (And What It Actually Does) #shorts

Have you ever hit Escape in SOLIDWORKS… and nothing happened?

Or worse - you thought you exited the command, but you were still stuck inside the Dimension tool?

That confusion comes from how SOLIDWORKS handles multi-step commands.

For most tools, pressing Escape immediately cancels the command and returns you to the selection tool.

But dimensioning works differently.

It’s a multi-step, multi-selection process. Each time you press Escape, you’re not exiting the command - you’re stepping backward through your previous selections.

That means:
• First press removes your last selection
• Second press removes the previous step
• Third press finally exits the command

So if you’re in the middle of placing a dimension, Escape won’t always behave the way you expect - because the command isn’t done yet.

This becomes especially important when working on:
• Sketch dimensioning
• Fully defined sketches
• Detailed part design
• Precision modeling
• Production drawings

Because in real engineering environments:

Understanding tool behavior saves time.
Knowing how Escape works in different contexts helps engineering teams:
Avoid confusion
Work faster
Control commands more precisely
Reduce frustration
Improve workflow efficiency

Sometimes the issue isn’t the tool - it’s how the tool is designed to behave.
