Should I have my air ducts cleaned?
A lot of homeowners ask, do I need to get my ducts cleaned? Is air duct cleaning necessary?
Generally the answer is no.
The air moving through the supply duct system is moving at 500-600 feet per minute. It's moving pretty quickly. This tends to keep things clean. The EPA agrees that homeowners, typically don't need to clean their air ducts. Unless they have has some type of major event that would introduce a lot of dirt or debris into the duct system. One of the things to think about is duct cleaning can be very invasive and can actually damage your duct system. And we constantly talk about that with homeowners, they need to be careful that that you don't have someone talk you into cleaning your ducts and run some electric equipment with brushes through the duct system and end up tearing the duct system apart.
A lot of homeowners will say back to me, "but what about the dust and dirt I see around my return grills. When I look up at the ceiling at the return grills I see a whole area of discolored paint there". Often a homeowner assumes that is dirt that came out of the duct system, what that really is and you see this especially where you have curved blade supply grills or you have a popcorn ceiling, you will see that discoloration. And what that is really from is not dirt or duct coming from your duct system but its the high-speed air that flowing through your system and flowing along your ceiling is creating a static charge. And ambient dust and dirt that is in the air gets attracted to the ceiling and sticks to it.
It's also possible that you have duct leakage, if you are seeing a lot of dirt and dust in your duct system, and your filter is getting dirty very quickly, it may be that your duct system is leaky and you are sucking air in from the attic. Maybe insulation or dust that is in your attic and your duct system needs to be sealed. So if you have a concern or you are seeing some sort of growth in your duct system, you’re seeing a lot of dirt inside the duct system or collecting on the filter might be a good idea to have a professional AC contractor look at it.
