Felix Höflmayer & Agnes Woitzuck - A Biography of an Excavation
Full title: A Biography of an Excavation: The Austrian-German Expedition to Tell Balata/Shechem 1913–1939
00:04 Introduction
06:03 Felix's Lecture
Abstract: We report on our ongoing studies of the archival material, still preserved documentation, and finds of the Austrian (1913–14) and German (1926–1939) excavations at Shechem under the direction of the German theologist Ernst Sellin. Except for some preliminary reports, the excavation was never finally published as Sellin’s manuscript was destroyed during World War II. Documents and finds have so far been located in Austria, Germany, Israel, the Netherlands, and the United States in more than a dozen different museums, universities, and archives. We present the biography of this excavation, describe the post-excavation itinerary of finds and documentation, and our plans for final publication.
Bios: Felix Höflmayer is a research group leader at the Austrian Archaeological Institute of the Austrian Academy of Sciences, co-directed the Austrian excavations at Tel Lachish (Israel) from 2017-2023, and is currently working on legacy data of the Austrian and German excavations at Tell Balata (Shechem).
Agnes Woitzuck is a student assistant at the research group Archaeology of the Levant at the Österreichisches Archäologisches Institut of the Österreichische Akademie der Wissenschaften. She served as square supervisor in the Austrian excavations at Tel Lachish (Israel) and conducted a project on Ernst Sellin’s relations with the Academy of Sciences. She will also publish part of the pottery assemblage excavated at Tell Balata and now stored at the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna.
