How to Apply a Brush Polyester Gelcoat in 7 easy steps
This video from FibreGlassDirect provides a brief guide on how to apply a Brush Polyester Gelcoat.
Before starting any project, please ensure you familiarise yourself with the relevant MSDS and TDS for the hazardous products you will use. Also ensure you are wearing the appropriate safety equipment and are working in a well ventilated area.
Step one: Ensure the mould is clean, dust free and has a release agent applied.
Step two: Prepare your work area. Ensure you have all the necessary tools and materials at hand.
Step three: Weigh out the required amount of gelcoat to ensure a thickness of 0.5mm.
Step four: Add catalyst at a rate of 2% to give a working time of approximately 12-20 minutes - depending on your room temperature.
Step five: Mix the catalyst into the Gelcoat thoroughly for an even cure of the Gelcoat and to avoid surface imperfections.
Step six: Apply the Gelcoat quickly - Use long brush strokes to achieve an even thickness and to remove trapped air pockets.
Step seven: Allow to cure for typically 5-6 hours before applying the next layer to the project. Ensure the Gelcoat is cured but still tacky.
