Am I free?
Indeed, human beings can do what they want, but they cannot will what they want because their will is determined by motives. This was said by the Austrian poet Robert Hamerling. Is there such a thing as free will?
Our will is determined by motives. A real freedom of the will would have to consist in the fact that one could want something without reason and without motive. To want something without reason, without motive, would mean to want something without wanting it. This does not work. The concept of will is inseparably linked to that of motive. If we want to discover our freedom, we must observe and recognize how our motives arise. The key is our thinking. It is not decisive whether I can carry out a decision I have made, but how this decision has come about. An action of which I do not know why I do it is never a free action.
In simple actions in everyday life, we are often not aware of our motive. There are many unconscious forces at work in creating our motives: our thoughts, our feelings, our emotions, our genetic makeup, our parents, all the human beings who programmed us, the country in which we grow up, our temperament, our talents, our vices, our destiny. The list seems endless. When we begin to think, reflect and meditate on our motives, our freedom begins. Thought is the key to freedom. As soon as our actions step out of the satisfaction of purely instinctive desires and the blind following of uncontrollable emotional impulses, our motives become interspersed with thoughts. When these thoughts rise from egoism to the greater good, our freedom begins.
The philosopher and spiritual teacher Rudolf Steiner said: Is human being free? By nature he is not, but he can make himself more and more free by awakening forces which lie dormant in him and which nature does not awaken. Human being can become more and more free. One cannot ask: Is human being free or unfree, but only: Is there a way for human being to achieve freedom? Yes, this way does exist. We can speak of man's freedom when we speak of those actions which are shaped out of his free thinking, where man, through a moral self-education, comes to the point that instincts, drives, emotions, his temperament do not influence him to an action, but only the devoted love for an action. In this devoted love for an action that can develop which arises from the ideal strength of pure and ethical thought. This is a free action. There is a way to become completely free in one's inner life, namely, by excluding, excluding more and more, the content of a thought in so far as it comes from outside, and by putting into special alertness the will element which in judging, in drawing conclusions, radiates through our thoughts. Thereby our thinking is transferred into pure thinking. We think, but in thinking only the will lives. (GA 202), (GA 333, GA 79)
Realized freedom is the highest stage of human development. A free human being is deeply imbued with ethical thoughts. All ethical writings and law books of this earth, have come into being through the free mind of human being.
Let's conclude with a quote from the Indian philosopher and spiritual teacher Jiddu Krishnamurti, who said, "Meditation is the purification of the mind and heart from egoism. Through this purification comes right thinking, which alone can free human beings from suffering."
