Worked from Monet’s Impression Sunrise painting at Le Havre which gave rise to the Impressionism movement and the attribution. The messy glazes and scrubbed on paint should have resulted in a painting that looks a terrible mess, but the opposite is true. Contrary to first impressions, the application of loose brushwork that comes together to evoke the truth in nature is not easy.

In this demonstration, a fair amount of linseed oil was needed, as well as the scrubbing on of uneven paint. The challenge is to resist the temptation of neatening the paint or of sharpening the edges. The brushwork should fall apart on close inspection, yet come together when viewed from afar.

Art materials required for this Monet oil painting demonstration are: acrylic paint in green and blue. And oil paints of: titanium white, cadmium yellow, cadmium red, permanent rose, ultramarine blue, cerulean blue, burnt sienna, burnt umber and viridian. Fine sables and narrow bristles were needed for the scrubbing on of paint and soft blends.
