Relive the action of our Post-War and Contemporary Art Evening Sale in New York.
History was made in Christie’s New York salerooms on November 2018 when David Hockney’s seminal Portrait of an Artist (Pool with Two Figures) sold for $90,312,500 (£70,227,449), a world record price for a living artist.
Among other impressive results were Mark Rothko’s Untitled (Rust, Blacks on Plum), Ocean Park #137 by Richard Diebenkorn, Study of Henrietta Moraes Laughing by Francis Bacon and Jean-Michel Basquiat’s Discography Two.
Finally, Wayne Thiebaud’s Happy Birthday Cakes, a 1962 painting that demonstrates the particular brand of Pop art that earned him critical acclaim, sold for $2,052,500 on the artist’s 98th birthday.
