Why is the EU suddenly interested in Latin America?
In the wake of the conflict in Ukraine and a split from Russia, the European Union appears to have spotted new opportunities in Latin America. That’s especially so following the election loss of Brazil’s President Jair Bolsonaro.
The EU’s top diplomat, Josep Borrell, hinted at a new focus from Europe in a recent visit to Uruguay and Argentina. Most strikingly, there are signs that a long-delayed trade agreement may be in for a new lease of life. So should Latin America welcome a change of heart from the EU? Or should it be a little suspicious of a union which is desperate for new sources of energy?
