Most Toxic Towns in Oklahoma Today - Picher & Cardin

Two Most Toxic Towns in Oklahoma - Picher & Cardin. We explore the remains of two of the most toxic towns in Oklahoma - Picher & Cardin - former mining towns that are now modern day ghost towns. These towns are located on the Quapaw Reservation and were heavily mined in the early to mid 1900s. It was during that time that the land surrounding Picher & Cardin became heavily poisoned by the minerals being mined (mainly zinc & lead). These minerals created such a toxic environoment that by 1983 the Tar Creek Superfund was established to help clean up these towns. Although cleanup efforts continue today, residents of these toxic towns in Oklahoma were offered buyouts, resulting in many abandoning their homes & places of business.
