Join us for the third segment of our Glacier Express cab ride series, filmed in April 2025, on the journey from Disentis/Mustér to Andermatt. This segment traverses one of the most dramatic and technically challenging sections of the route, operated by the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn (MGB).

The Glacier Express, often referred to as the “slowest express train in the world,” is a legendary direct service connecting the mountain resorts of Zermatt and St. Moritz in an eight-hour panoramic journey through the heart of the Swiss Alps. Operated jointly by the Rhaetian Railway (RhB) and Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn (MGB), the GEX runs entirely on a meter-gauge network renowned for its engineering marvels and stunning landscapes.

Departing from Disentis/Mustér, situated at 1,129 meters above sea level in the canton of Graubünden, the train begins its ascent towards the Oberalp Pass. This stretch features some of the steepest gradients on the Glacier Express route, necessitating the use of the Abt rack-and-pinion system to navigate inclines of up to 125‰. The line climbs steadily, passing through the village of Sedrun, before reaching the summit at the Oberalp Pass, the highest point on the Glacier Express journey at 2,033 meters above sea level.

The Oberalp Pass is a notable alpine crossing that connects the cantons of Graubünden and Uri. In winter, the road over the pass is closed due to snow, but the railway remains operational year-round, providing a vital link between the regions.

Descending from the pass, the train enters the canton of Uri, winding through the Urseren Valley towards Andermatt. This historic village, located at 1,435 meters above sea level, serves as a key junction in the Swiss rail network, connecting routes to Zermatt, Disentis/Mustér, and Göschenen.
