UP Tugma Kulintang Ensemble

SOUTHERN PHILIPPINE KULINTANG ENSEMBLE
A traditional gong ensemble played mostly by Islamic groups found in Mindanao, played in a variety of occasions and rituals.

Tidtu Paganay
One of the rhythmic modes of the Maguindanaon people, played to showcase the virtuosity of the kulintang player. The accompanying dance are movements taken from silat, a martial art found throughout the Southeast Asian region.

Kapmatalabimban
A traditional piece of the Maranao people.

Sinulog a Kangungudan
Another rhythmic mode of the Maguindanaon, used to express sadness or grief. The accompanying dance is called pangalay, or "fingernail dance" of the Tausug people.

Luntang
Originally a piece performed on a set of horizontal logs played by the Yakan people is used here to accompany the Mangalay dance. The luntang was commonly used for long distance communication as well as a means to keep farmers awake while keeping the birds away from their fields.
