Words Matter with Kel Richards: The origins of ‘Lionize’

Broadcaster and wordsmith Kel Richards has discussed the origins and the meaning of the word “lionize” with Sky News host Peta Credlin.

“It goes back to the year of the Tudors back to the time of Henry VII and Elizabeth I," Mr Richards said.

“Back in those days there was a zoo at the Tower of London and any visitor who came to London was taken to see the zoo especially the rarest and most interestingly animals, the African animals the lions.

“So, they were the centre of attention, and everyone had to see them.

“So, if you start treating someone as the centre of attention and everyone has to see them and pay attention to them, they are being lionized because of the lions that once lived at the Tower of London.”
