Sri Lanka - Journey to Kandy - Vlog #3
Journey from Negombo, to Kandy, Sri Lanka via Tuk Tuk and train. The distance from Negombo to Kandy is 116km (72miles).
The Tuk Tuk journey of 31km (19miles) was just under an hour and took me to Veyangoda Train Station (1,400sr, £6.83). I was a little early so waited for the 13:25 (Express Train) to Kandy. I purchased my 2nd Class ticket (130sr, £0.63) from Platform 4 and then walked over the walkway to platform 3. The train arrived on time although it did not have any 2nd Class Carriages, so I proceeded to try and squeeze onto 3rd Class. I was letting everyone on in front of me being kind… Then ended up standing on the first step up into the train. There was a grab handle to hold onto but only one. Trying to hold on with your right hand while having your backpacks trying to pull you out of the train was a little scary to say the least. I hung on for half an hour, thankfully at the next couple of stops more people got off than on and I was able to get onto the train, even though I was still stood right in the entrance. The standing only train journey lasted 4 hours, one of the reasons it takes so long is that it’s a single track so when another train is coming the other way you have to wait in a siding or sometimes even back up into a siding for the other train to pass, it also does not go very fast (Thank God) as it’s up hill most of the way! Leaving Kandy should be quicker as it’s down hill!
I just glad that I went to Veyangoda to catch the train as originally I was going to get a Tuk Tuk to Colombo Fort Station and go from there. Tuk Tuk to Colombo Fort would have taken at least 1 hour 45 minutes and cost possibly 3,000sr. The train journey probably would not have been that much more but would have taken an additional hour. The thought of nearly 7 hours to travel 72 miles and nearly £8.00 more, I’m not sure how I would have coped!
