Mahler’s Second Symphony with Garanca, Chichon and the Gran Canaria Philharmonic on Easter Sunday

79 musicians, together with mezzo-soprano Elina Garanca and conductor Karel Mark Chichon record from their homes and with their own means a selection from Mahler's Second Symphony, including Organist Angel Hortas live from Jerez Cathedral in Spain, in a project of great technical complexity that is being transmitted via social media.

With this ambitious recording all of these artists unite to send a message through the universal power of music, that despite the Covid-19 crisis and the strict confinement to their homes the power of human resolve and culture is at the forefront of the island of Gran Canaria and its people.

The production of this recording has presented enormous technical difficulties, with 80 separate audio/video tracks all recorded with mobile phones being mixed into one whole, with recordings taking place from homes in Gran Canaria, Malaga (Garanca & Chichon) and Jerez de la Frontera (Hortas, organist). Particularly difficult has been the access to certain instruments such as timpani and percussion during the severe lockdown rule in Spain.

We wish to acknowledge the fantastic audio and video production work that Toni Hernandez Marrero has realised to produce this final result.
