P’tah Lanu Shaar (Keep Open the Gates)

The N’ilah service, one of the most sacred hours of the Yom Kippur, is also one of my favorite moments of the entire High Holiday season. The service has unique melodies and modes that are only sung during this holy hour. This Sunday, we will celebrate Hoshana Raba, which marks the end of this most hallowed season. According to Jewish tradition, during the High Holidays the gates of heaven are opened and the names of the living are inscribed in the book of life. At the end of these holidays, the gates are closed and the book of life is sealed.

In the P’tah Lanu Shaar prayer we plead that the gates of heaven stay open long enough for us all to enter and be inscribed in the book of life.

This song by Eliana Light was commissioned by Park Avenue Synagogue for ‘Mahzor for Young Families’, which was published in 2017.

Lyrics:
Keep open the gate for us, at the time of the closing of the gate, for the day is coming to an end.
