[5] Where did Angola get its name? - WIAW Shorts

Angola is a country in south west Africa, and it has one of the most aggressive looking flags in the world!
In fact, there have been movements in the country to change the flag to something nicer, but I am getting off topic! Where does Angola get its name? well first we have to know that until 1975 Angola was a Portuguese colony, and its name comes from the Portuguese language.
The name Angola comes from the Portuguese colonial name Reino de Angola ('Kingdom of Angola'), and the Angola part comes from a transliteration of a native word for king – ngola – which was the title used by local rulers when the Portuguese arrived in the 15th century.
So if you have been following basically the Portuguese called Angola literally something like “the kingdom of the king”… how original!
