FINALLY! Update Your Switch NOW! Nintendo eShop Lag Is FINALLY FIXED!

One of my biggest and most persistent complaints about the Nintendo Switch, the Switch Lite, and the Switch OLED has always been how notoriously and pathetically slow the Nintendo eShop is. It has been a genuinely painful experience to navigate through the digital storefront for years. It's one of the things I really appreciate about the new Nintendo Switch 2—the eShop experience on the newer hardware is so much better and incredibly fluid. But according to widespread reports, this brand new system firmware update that we're going to install today is actually supposed to finally speed up the eShop on all older consoles!

Now, the unit I am testing this on is actually my original launch day Nintendo Switch from 2017. So, that's really cool that we have this update now available for a console that has been out for so long. We're going to go down here to the eShop icon and see if the overall performance and responsiveness are actually any better. Slightly annoying right off the bat: it did make me re-log into my account, but there is a clear message stating that the Nintendo eShop has been updated. Let's see what has changed. The design has been completely overhauled. Plus, if you've set your system's theme to 'Basic Dark', the eShop is now automatically set to match that aesthetic. I already had mine set like that, so finally seeing a sleek dark mode in the eShop is a fantastic addition. Additionally, your password settings and PIN requirements for entering the eShop and using saved payment methods have been updated. So, it's looking much better from a security and usability standpoint!

I mean, while it might not be quite as blisteringly fast as the built-in app on the Switch 2, for a launch day original Nintendo Switch, this is definitely a massive improvement. Before we pass final judgment, let's actually go in here and look through the 'Great Deals' section because this is the specific area where I have always found the absolute biggest amount of lag and stuttering.

Holy cats, that is so much better! I used to only be able to get through like four or five rows of games on sale, and then it would just pause and load, and load, and load, endlessly buffering the thumbnails. This is really, really awesome. Everything is loading smoothly, the thumbnails are popping right in, and the scrolling is no longer a stuttery mess. Wait, why do I have a free download showing up here? Oh, because I've already purchased this specific game on my other system. So, we're going to go ahead and download that too while we're at it. I did forget to have it set to 'remember me' for my password, so I had to log back in one more time. But honestly, just going through the storefront here, this is pretty darn responsive. I am very happy with this huge performance boost compared to what the eShop used to be.

For years, Nintendo Switch owners begged for a fix to the laggy digital storefront. The primary reason the eShop ran so poorly on the Switch, Switch Lite, and Switch OLED was because of its outdated system architecture. With this update, Nintendo has optimized the backend data, drastically improving memory management and reducing load times. This mirrors the design philosophy behind the lightning-fast eShop on the Switch 2. It is incredibly refreshing to see Nintendo breathe new life into their legacy hardware!

Another incredible quality-of-life feature included in this firmware update is the long-awaited true Dark Mode for the eShop. For years, players using the battery-saving 'Basic Dark' system theme were still blinded by the bright white loading screens of the eShop. Now, the storefront dynamically reads your system settings and matches your preferred aesthetic perfectly!
