Public speaking can be a frightening and near paralyzing experience for many people. But, in the attached video, Social Coach Barron Cruz provides a strategy which will alleviate the pressure and stress endemic to most when they are speaking in public, and convert that unease into a powerful and successful presentation. Mr. Cruz discusses the following six tools and perspectives which can immediately improve your public communication skills, and, as important, make speeches a rewarding experience for you and your audience:
1) Memorize the first 30 seconds of your delivery, so that you have it "down cold" and can speak almost without thinking for that initial period. This allows you time to adjust to the "feel" and atmosphere of your location and listeners. This then leads to a confidence which will lower your stress level right away.
2) Make the presentation a conversation, not a performance. After that initial section of your speech which is committed to memory, "shift gears" into a more informal approach, in which you view the group as part of your "team" in understanding the important things you have to say. Weave in short references to some topic about which you are passionate, even if only peripherally related to your main topic. (Ex.--"You might compare this new sales venture to one of my interests, skydiving. . .")
3) Do not resist nervousness--expect it; accept it. It happens to nearly everyone. Just be calmed with the thought that it is a normal part of being "on stage," and it will pass as you work through your message.
4) Meditate briefly before you start when you feel the nervousness. This is not "maharishi" type meditation, but merely clearing your mind of all the thoughts you can for a quick moment before beginning to focus on your speaking task.
5) Get the crowd on your side. Start off with a gracious comment thanking them for the opportunity to speak on a topic which means so much to you, and hopefully, to them as well.
6) Be mindful of your delivery, particularly your tonality, as you speak, especially during that first 30 seconds. You should command respect and attention in your voice. More about this critical skill is available in Barron's "Vocal Power & Tonality Program" discussed above.
