AFFECTION-IMAGE / QUALISIGN OF EMPITENESS [QUALISIGNO de vacuidade, L'eclipse, M. Antonioni (1962)
"Ao final de O Eclipse, todos os planos percorridos pelo casal são revistos e corrigidos pelo vazio, como indica o título do filme (...) O objeto do cinema de Antonioni é chegar ao não-figurativo através de uma aventura cujo termo é o eclipse do rosto, o apagar dos personagens".p139
a) sign of extinction of affection - 1(1)’(1)’’ – qualisign of emptiness - sign of the category (1) with the emphasis on its extinction; (1(1)’) meaning that the qualisign of emptiness is the sign that dies out when the movement of affection (1) starts from the center of indetermination (0)” and extinguishes in the universal variation (0)’ of the perceptive sweep. For Deleuze, qualisigns express qualities that are not actualized, so that they appear in an any-space-whatever, especially in close-up of faces that shows deindividuation (Deleuze 1982-1983: lecture 27 part 3) The fading out of an affection-image in an any-space-whatever happens by emptying the features of a face into an amorphous space in which the movement proceeds between locations “independently of the connections and orientations which the vanished characters and situations gave to them […] It is an extinction or a disappearing, but one which is not opposed to the genetic element… There are therefore two states of the any-space-whatever… These two states [disconnection and emptiness] are always implied in each other, and we can only say that the one is ‘before’ and the other ‘after’.” (Deleuze 1985:110)
Examples:
a.1) “At the end of Eclipse all the shots through which the couple have passed are surveyed and corrected by the void, as the title of the film indicates… The object of Antonioni's cinema is to reach the non-figurative through an adventure whose end is the eclipse of the face, the obliteration of characters.” (Bonitzer in Deleuze 1985: 119)

"À la fin de L'Eclipse, tous les plans parcourus par le couple sont revus et corrigés par le vide, comme l'indique le titre du film (...) L'objet du cinema d'Antonioni, c'est d'arriver au non-figuratif, par une aventure dont le terme est l'eclipse du visage, l'effacement des personnages" (IM, p. 168)
