The Irrigation System of Oman - Controlled by the Sun and the Stars | Treasures of the World

There are ancient watchtowers on the mountains of Oman. They are not used for military purposes, but for water surveillance. Thousands of canals crisscross the country. Many are more than 10 kilometers long. Above ground, guided through tunnels and viaducts, with distribution arms in the finger system, artistic, traditionally refined through experience, without hydraulic aids, guided only by gradients, an ingenious engineering achievement that is passed on from generation to generation. The so-called Aflaaj form one of the most sophisticated irrigation systems on earth. The dry desert land would have no chance of survival without its water channels. For 4,000 years, water has been consistently collected, measured and distributed according to social rules in the Sultanate of Oman on the Arabian Peninsula. In many places, nature is still the benchmark.
In Al Jeela, high in the mountains, there is no electricity or satellite reception. Here the sun and stars are still the guideposts in the universe and determine how and when water can be released and consumed. In Oman, the sun and stars direct the survival principle Aflaaj.
