Please read FAQ below. I didn't invent this idea & am just a messenger. I’ve seen countless happy results. But valid lightbrighting questions keep popping up. It would seem helpful to address them here. But please watch the full vid before commenting; you wouldn't make a cake using only half the recipe. I went to great lengths to do a lot of due diligence for this one. Thanks!

☣️ Disclaimer: Needless to say, try this at your own risk. All plastics & chips react differently. None were designed to still be working today. No guarantees. Don't try it for more than 3 days. Any deyellowing method is not good for plastic & can cause brittleness, as I said in the video.

FAQ:

1. "I've seen someone use this method & their case fell to pieces after 2 years!"
I’m certain this is a "post hoc ergo propter hoc" fallacy. This "false cause" fallacy wrongly assumes that since x happened after y, y must be the cause of x. In reality that can't be proven & as we know from these old cases, x (cracking) would have likely happened with or without lightbrighting. It’s like saying “You borrowed my car & it got a flat, therefore you cause flat tires!”

Consider this: A 30 yr old case has had 262,800 hrs of household heat, diffused UV, fluorescent light, nicotine. In the vid I put them in the sun for 3 days = 24 hrs more sun. Will a case with 262,800 hrs of exposure fail after just 24 hrs more?

Dr Pickett's main paper was published 15 yrs ago & his advice is still that UV causes less brittleness than peroxide.

If you've seen a case cracked, consider the fallacy, & the history of the case, from factory plastic injection ingredient ratio correctness, to 30 yr household conditions, to past peroxide use.

2. "Putting it in the sun is worse than using peroxide!"
Lightbrighting is retrobrighting "minus" peroxide. The Scientists say it is incorrect to think removing harsh bleach will increase damage.

3. "Won't UV cause brittleness?"
I address this in the video. Liquid peroxide can leach into invisible fissures in plastic, embrittling from inside. But UV is confined to just the top 25-50 micrometers.

4. "I've seen cases reyellow a year after doing this!"
All deyellowing will undo to a degree. Peroxide is notorious for reyellowing, requiring repeated, even more damaging treatments.

5. "UV/heat will damage the electronics!"
We’re living on borrowed time with these computers. Heat alone doesn’t kill chips, many other factors contribute such as vibration, moisture, ESD, etc.
- Think about car radio electronics, in blistering heat for years & still working
- The chips are shaded by the vented case
- We regularly solder at 650°F for short periods, so backyard heat should be fine for limited periods - but try at your own risk
Summary: Chips reach 100°F+ in normal use x 30 yrs, & their highly ventilated cases are specifically designed to let hot air escape not 'hotbox' inside, but no guarantees at this age.

Conclusion: Think about how many awful peroxide results you’ve seen: classic machines streaked, ruined, crumbled, trashed. If you own a yellowed case & you feel there's nothing to lose by trying a method a top plastic yellowing expert says is safer, you are free to choose. If you use common sense, don't put it out for weeks, follow the advice & caution in the vid, & your case doesn't have an underlying issue, the science says you'll see nice results.
