Pelvic Organ Prolapse : What you need to know-Dr. Mollinath Mukherjee| Urogynecologist |

Pelvic organ prolapse (POP) occurs when the muscles and tissues supporting the pelvic organs weaken, causing organs like the bladder, uterus, or rectum to drop or press into the vaginal canal. Several factors contribute to this condition. One major cause is childbirth trauma, where pelvic muscles and ligaments are stretched or torn during vaginal delivery, particularly with larger babies or prolonged labor. Aging also plays a significant role, as muscles naturally weaken over time, and this is further exacerbated by menopause, when estrogen levels decline, reducing the strength and elasticity of pelvic tissues. Chronic coughing, often due to asthma, smoking, or chronic bronchitis, can strain pelvic muscles, leading to prolapse. Similarly, activities involving heavy lifting or repeated strain, such as certain occupations or intense workouts, can increase the likelihood of developing pelvic organ prolapse.
