What has happened in the Alex Salmond inquiry so far?

Nicola Sturgeon has said she “deeply regrets” her government’s unlawful investigation of Alex Salmond, apologising to the two women who were “failed” by the botched probe.

But when asked if she owed the Scottish people an apology for having previously told them they should trust Mr Salmond, Scotland’s first minister said she “trusted him” and refused to “apologise for the behaviour of somebody else”.

Salmond was tried and acquitted last year on sexual assault charges and claims the misconduct allegations brought by several women were part of a conspiracy to wreck his political career.
