People were shocked because electric vehicles produce no tailpipe emissions, and they normally don’t need a pollution certificate (PUC) like regular fuel-powered vehicles do. Many on social media pointed out that this seemed like a technical or data error in the traffic enforcement system. In some reports the system also added an overspeeding fine together with the pollution fine.

Officials later explained that the automated cameras or software sometimes incorrectly read the vehicle type or database information, leading to an incorrect challan being generated. In some cases, such challans were reversed after review when authorities realized the vehicle was an EV and not actually polluting.

At the same time, governments in places like Delhi are tightening pollution rules overall. They are enforcing stricter penalties for vehicles that don’t have a valid Pollution Under Control (PUC) certificate. These measures are part of broader efforts to reduce smog and poor air quality, and officials emphasise that the focus remains on vehicles that actually contribute to pollution.

These cases around pollution challans and electric vehicles mainly highlights a mix of automation glitches, fines being issued to EV owners by mistake, and stronger enforcement of pollution rules in cities struggling with air quality. The incidents have drawn public attention and debate about how traffic and pollution enforcement systems handle new, cleaner vehicle technologies.
