Tropical Depression 7 forms in Atlantic, expected to become Tropical Storm | Tracking the Tropics

Tropical Depression Seven has officially formed in the central Atlantic Ocean, halfway between the Windward Islands and Cape Verde (off the west coast of Africa). This tropical wave is one we've been keeping an eye on for a few days now, and receiving a tropical depression designation means that this system is now in the first step of development in the process of becoming a named storm.

Seven has winds of 35 miles per hour and a center of low pressure at 1007 millibars. Once wind speeds are greater than 39 miles per hour, this system will be upgraded into a tropical storm and claim the next name on the Atlantic hurricane season list, which is Gabrielle.

Seven is moving to the west at 13 miles per hour as of this morning. The path is expected to twist and turn a little, but this system will continue up to the northwest moving just north of the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico where it is expected to strengthen into a Category 1 hurricane
