The Final Approach Fix (FAF) is the fix where the Final Approach Segment of a Non-Precision Approach starts.
The Approach Procedure has three segments: The Initial Approach Segment, Intermediate Approach Segment, and the Final Approach Segment.
In order to fly correctly a Non-Precision Approach, it is very important to identify where the FAF is.
You have to make sure that you overfly the Final Approach Fix at the right Altitude and established laterally.
The FAF is indicated in the Approach Charts by a Maltese Cross.
Normally, its position is identified by a dme distance from a ground station or a ground aid station.
The biggest misconception about the Final Approach Fix is that many pilots think the FAF applies to ILSs approaches as well.
This is so because you can find the Faf depicted on the ILS LOC chart, however, the Final Approach Fix is on the ILS LOC charts because it applies to the Localizer procedure only.
If you look at a CATII/III chart you will notice that there is no FAF because there is no Non-Precision Approach.
