Your Body Is a Collective Mind: Michael Levin, Bioelectricity & Intelligence Without Brains

What if intelligence did not begin with brains?

This episode explores the mind-bending work of biologist Michael Levin, whose research on planarian flatworms, bioelectricity, regeneration, cancer, xenobots, and anthrobots challenges one of our deepest assumptions: that brains are the only place where memory, problem-solving, and goal-directed behaviour can exist.

We begin with flatworms that can regrow entire bodies from tiny fragments, even appearing to preserve learned information after their brains have been removed. From there, we explore why DNA may be less like a blueprint and more like a parts list, and why the real “map” of the body may be stored in slow bioelectric communication between cells.

Along the way, we look at two-headed worms, tadpoles with eyes grown on their stomachs, cancer as a breakdown of cellular cooperation, living robots made from frog and human cells, slime mould solving mazes, plants computing without brains, and the unsettling philosophical question of what the self really is.

If your body is a swarm of billions of communicating cellular agents, then where exactly are “you”?
