Operation Market Garden in Color: 9 Days That Changed WWII

35,000 Allied paratroopers dropped into the Netherlands in the largest airborne invasion in history. Their mission was to seize key bridges, push into Germany, and end the war by Christmas.

Some bridges fell, but fierce German resistance halted the advance. At Arnhem, British paratroopers were surrounded, and by September 25, the survivors retreated across the Rhine. More than 17,000 Allied troops were killed, wounded, or captured.

Market Garden was ambitious, but it failed. Arnhem would always be remembered as a bridge too far.
