Team Topologies — A Deep Dive into Conway’s Law by Ned Horvath - Agile Austin Leader SIG August 2021
Topic: Team Topologies — A Deep Dive into Conway’s Law
A key aspect of agile practice is self-organizing teams. But our education system and old-school hierarchical management structure prepare us to be individual contributors, doing whatever work is assigned to us. How do we organize the work within a team? How do we organize the work when there are multiple teams?
Many years ago (1967, to be precise) Mel Conway made the key observation that:
"Any organization…will produce a design whose structure is a copy of the organization’s communication structure."
In this conversation we’ll turn Conway’s Law on its head: organize the work to optimize the communication structure. We’ll look at multiple communications topologies and think about how to design one for your application.
Speaker: Ned Horvath
Ned Horvath (he/him) is a software engineer, agile coach, chronic academic and recovering C-level technical manager with an entrepreneurial appreciation for effective product management and organizational structure. He presently serves The University of Texas at Austin as a Principal Software Engineer. He previously served as Education Chair for Agile Austin for 5 years and leads the Agile Austin Book Club.
