The name Butyrskaya Street appeared in the XVIII century after the village of Butyrki, which was located here, which has been documented since 1624. The word butyrki meant "a small village separated from a large settlement by a field or forest; settlements; part of the village, several houses on the outskirts". Toponyms of Butyrka are often found in the European part of Russia (in the XIX century there were 6 villages with this name in the Moscow province). The village belonged to I. N. Romanov, the uncle of Tsar Mikhail Fedorovich, the ancestor of the house of Romanov. After the construction of the Church of the Nativity of the Most Holy Theotokos in 1682-1684 (56 Butyrskaya Street), the village of Butyrki officially became known as the village of Rozhdestveno on Sukhodol, but this name was not fixed.

In the middle of the XVII century, the "Moscow elective regiment of the soldiers 'system" was placed here, which became known as the Butyrsky regiment. In 1767, Butyrskaya Soldatskaya Sloboda was transferred to the jurisdiction of the Moscow city police and soon entered the borders of Moscow. At one time it was called Bolshaya Butyrskaya Street.

It was named after the New Dmitrovskaya Sloboda (XVII century), which separated from the Old and Small Dmitrovskaya Sloboda (located on the site of Bolshaya Dmitrovka and Malaya Dmitrovka streets). Until 1891, it was part of Dolgorukovskaya Street.
The street appeared at the beginning of the XIX century, getting its name from the forest warehouses and the market, which existed until the beginning of the next century.

In 1873, a depot for konok was created, later converted into a tram, and even later — into a trolleybus (now located at Lesnaya, 20, now there is a food market "Depot"). Passenger tram traffic on the street was opened only in the 1900s.

In addition to the Miussky Park, the club building named after him is located on Lesnaya Street. Zueva, built in 1928 by architect Ilya Golosov (a monument of Moscow constructivism). On the corner of Lesnaya and Novoslobodskaya there is a business center "Chaika Plaza", built in the late 1990s and characterized by unconventional decorative solutions.

On August 4, 1941, during another air raid on Moscow, Mikhail Savoyarov, a popular eccentric artist, poet and composer of the Silver Age, was killed in the gateway of house 43.

On October 7, 2006, Anna Politkovskaya, a columnist for Novaya Gazeta, was killed in the entrance of the house 8/12 (where she lived).

In 2013, the buildings of the "White Gardens" complex were completed, which increased the level of traffic on the street.

In 2019, the gastronomic complex "Depot Lesnaya" was opened on the site of the 4th Trolleybus park, which is based on the shopping center "Depot. Moscow".
