Life Expectancy: 11 to 13 years
Also known as the Karabash or Kangal Dog, the Anatolian Shepherd Dog is a large, powerful breed hailing from Turkey where they were used to guard flocks of sheep and goats. These highly intelligent and clever dogs were bred to rely on their instincts, which makes training difficult. Their strong will means training can take a long time and lots of patience. Anatolian Shepherd Dogs are regal and protective. They love their family and their home and can be territorial.
They are natural guard dogs and quite independent so don’t expect lap cuddles all day long. They enjoy being the center of attention in a single-pet household. Expect your children to be treated as your dog’s own – they will be patient, kind, and caring with youngsters. Formally introduce guests to your Anatolian Shepherd Dog before they pat him and you can expect a happy dog, but one who will watch your guests like a hawk to make sure their family is safe.
Serious but non-aggressive, the Anatolian Shepherd Dog has high-energy needs and benefits from lots of exercise. A long daily walk or run is ideal. You may want to consider moving to a house if you live in an apartment as this dog needs lots of space to expend their energy. Small urban dwellings won’t suit this dog either, they are best suited to lots of land. Their short dense coat is easy to groom, just brush weekly. They shed heavily so keep your vacuum cleaner out, but at least they’re hypoallergenic.
