USS Milwaukee Stranded Trying to Save Sub

USS Milwaukee was a St. Louis-class protected cruiser that entered service with the United States Navy in 1906. On January 5th 1917, Milwaukee got underway to assist in salvaging the submarine H-3 which had run aground off Humboldt Bay in heavy fog on December 14th. On January 13th, after disregarding the recommendations of local mariners, the cruiser became stranded in the first line of breakers off Samoa, California while attempting to pull the submarine out of the sand she was stuck in. Four hundred and twenty-one enlisted men and seventeen officers were rescued safely by the Humboldt Bay Life-Saving Station and local volunteers but attempts to pull Milwaukee to safety were unsuccessful. H-3 was ultimately salvaged and returned to service later in the year, but the Navy declared Milwaukee a loss and she was decommissioned on March 6th 1917. A pier was built out to her wreck so that her guns and equipment could be salvaged by the Navy, and what was left of her was sold in August 1919 and salvaged periodically thereafter. What is left of her wreck lies off Samoa beach to this day and can be seen at low tide.
