OpenTTD Madness WIP
This map's a work in progress. There's 800 or so trains in it so far, but the transport system's not even 10% utilized...
I could thus use:
- 7,200 more trains,
- Some additional signaling
- More gatherer trains.
So it works by using a total of four gathering networks for each of the thirteen diffrent base resources, sending them to the four corners and transferring them to the main link system.
This takes everything from each of the four corners and sends it to the opposing corner, hugging the edge of the map for build simplicity. Where it gets processed and sent around again in some cases (steel, paper). Then, the result is goods and food. Which are sent around again to the town nearest by the opposing corner.
For example, some iron is taken from an iron mine via truck to a nearby station. Then it's brought to the south drop by train. Then it's picked up by the roundabout trains, which have one cart of each type on them (so we don't get bottlenecks due to probability). The iron is transported to north drop. Thus far, the actual 'as the bird flies' travelling distance will be at least half the map, 512 tiles (at most nearly the whole map diagonal, ~1450 tiles). Anyway, it's made into steel. The steel is taken all the way back to south drop. That gets converted into goods. Those get taken to the north goods drop (close by the NND) by a diffrent series of trains.
The 16-wide single-way mainline is actually four 4-wide single-way lines bundled together. (Two east-west, two north-south). Can't wait to see what it'll look like with 10x more traffic, but it's such a pain making and ordering around all those trains -.-. It will also test out the new mainline station design you see a couple times. It's very compact (28x14 including pre-station signals and tunnels, but excluding 4-to-12 merges&splits (those vary in length)), and should handle four lines of traffic reasonably well. Signalling needs to be adapted to train speed though, because of its length.
This video follows around one of the trains that carry a variety of cargo around the N-S loop.
