Three years since Russia’s destruction of the Kakhovka dam

June 6 marks three years since Russian forces blew up the Kakhovka Hydroelectric Power Plant and its adjacent dam in Kherson Oblast, triggering one of the most severe humanitarian and environmental disasters in the region's history.

The deliberate destruction of the facility on June 6, 2023, drained the Kakhovka reservoir — which supported the stability of Europe's largest nuclear facility, the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant — and sent floodwaters rushing across southern Ukraine, with ecological consequences felt as far as neighboring Black Sea countries.
