Gene therapy for AADC deficiency changes child's life | Ohio State Medical Center

This video features Rian, a little girl born with a rare genetic disease called AADC deficiency, which causes severe developmental delays, muscle weakness and difficulty moving. At age five, Rian underwent brain surgery and became the 12th child in the world to receive the life changing AADC gene therapy treatment, developed by Krystof Bankiewicz, MD, PhD, and Russell Lonser, MD, at the Ohio State Wexner Medical Center. The gene therapy restores the body’s ability to produce serotonin and dopamine, which are necessary for normal nervous system function.
