HOUSE FLIPPER: #15 The Wilcox Family Home (Garden After Building the House)

NOTE: I am only occasionally doing House Flipper, as my time is fully devoted to my work in Blender. I may occasionally upload a video here, but only if I have time.

The Wilcox Family Home (Garden After Building the House)

The Story

When Greyson and Norah Wilcox bought this house, it was just a cinder-block shell with a few windows installed and a scraggly yard of mostly dirt. That, however, didn't keep them from seeing its potential.

As a professional photographer, Greyson wanted a house that was both office and home, where he could meet with clients in the first floor seating area, coordinate work in the adjacent office, and the family could have the entire second floor where the kids could play and everyone could spend time together.
A full guest bedroom on the first floor allows convenient access to the adjacent first-floor bathroom, including shower, while a second-floor bath serves as both family bathroom and laundry room.

Eleven-year-old Davis has had a passion for elegant supercars since he was seven. But his room isn't papered with them: instead he prefers a couple of well-chosen photos of his favorite, a white Lamborghini. The entire room is done in a neat, black-and-white decor that reflects his quiet, studious nature.

Six-year-old Mia's room is a pink fairyland, with a special bed next to hers for her little dog Muffin, who follows Mia everywhere she goes. (Muffin also has a bed outside next to the playground, so she can watch over Mia while she plays.) Her parents also created a “magical corner” built into the nook just outside the upstairs family area where she can play while the rest of the family enjoys a movie on the couch. The entire family dotes on Mia, even her older brother.

The modest rear balcony makes a great place to have refreshments or even lunch for the kids when Dad has visiting clients downstairs. The smaller balcony, on the front of the house, both Greyson and Norah immediately wanted as part of their bedroom, their own private spot for tea or coffee and relaxed conversation.

Fun fact: The photo of Mia outside her room is her preschool graduation picture, which she's particularly proud of.
The Design

The color scheme for this house was inspired by a photo of a kitchen on HGTV.com. The orange wall combined with industrial gray minimalism intrigued me, and as I started to work with it (not my usual colors), I wanted another color for a bold contrast....which turned out to be cyan/turquoise (“Sky Blue” in the game).

The first floor came together quite well, but the second floor was a huge challenge. The windows kept getting in the way (don't they always?), and it took I don't know how many hours to figure out a suitable floorplan.

Fun fact: To see how many hours I put into this house, look at the mini-map in the top right corner at the beginning of the video. (I had the map turned off while videoing some of the footage.)
For those who haven't played House Flipper, it's the numbers inside the green circle, in hours:minutes:seconds.
