Cisco router ports

provides a quick and basic understanding of the various ports
on a Cisco Router. An entry-level IT, Network, or Telecom professional. would find this valuable to know before their first assignment involving Cisco.

Cisco makes up about 70% of the enterprise-grade data center connectivity equipment. If you're a IT pro, you're definitely going to encounter Cisco switches and routers.

In this video, we demonstrate with a Cisco 1700 route which has a variety of ports - Console, Aux, Ehternet, WAN, and Voice (RJ-11).

While Console, Aux, WAN, and Ethernet ports are all RJ-45, they are very different in the functionality. A common rookie mistake is to try to connect a network cable from their laptop directly into the Console port of the route.

Console ports are SERIAL connections, they require a "Cisco console cable" and Serial connection on the PC or laptop.

Likewise, WAN (Wide area Netwok) ports look much like Ethernet ports too. Again, completely different function. (unless the WAN just happens to be an Ethernet hand-off from a broadband or metro connection).

Cisco uses a color convention to help tell the ports apart
Baby Blue - Console
Yellow - Ehternet
Royal Blue - WAN
Pink - Voice

There are two other videos on another channel of mine which deal with entry-level cisco knowledge:
