Zoom vs. Microsoft Teams for Video Conferencing

This week we are comparing Zoom video conferencing to the video conferencing feature in Microsoft Teams. Both platforms share helpful features like the ability to raise your hand, chat in a sidebar during the conference, and use backgrounds or background blur. However, there are still specific situations where either Zoom or Teams may be a better fit for a specific situation. For that reason, many organizations use both tools, rather than committing to one or the other. So let’s take a look at what these differences are and when they should be considered.

If you’re planning a meeting with a group exceeding 9 people where you’re addressing non-classified information, Zoom might be a better platform. (The biggest reason Zoom is preferred in some of these larger meeting scenarios is because it allows you to view all participants' video feeds in gallery views show up to 49 people per page, wherein teams, you’re only able to see the 9 most active participants at a time.

Zoom is also usually a better choice for external use with customers or vendors since it is a platform that is easy to access as a guest and widely familiar. However, there are certain scenarios where security and compliance may not be up-to-par in a zoom setting.

Anytime you are discussing confidential information, personal health information, or have compliance standards that you need to meet, Teams provides the security and compliance that you need in these situations.

For those same reasons, Teams is a great tool for internal meetings within departments.

One final consideration is time limits. Any time you expect a meeting to exceed 40 minutes, Teams will be preferable. Zoom has a 40-minute time limit on the free version of their software, where Teams has no time limit and is included in your 365 license as a runbiz™ customer.
