2021 | 10 Things You Should Do after Your Oath Ceremony

#citizenship #oath #ceremony #covid #howto #whatshouldyoudo
Hi everyone. Welcome back to my channel.

So I just got out of my oath ceremony today! And here is the citizenship certificate! So I am officially a US citizen starting now! A little bit about the ceremony. It was unfortunate that due to Covid, the ceremony has to be concise - no speech, no special guest speakers - it has to be kept pretty simple. There were only 16 people in the room with me and we did the oath and they started passing out the citizenship certificates. Fast, simple and here I am! The whole process only took 15 minutes.

Also, please check out my other video that might help you prepare for your Oath Ceremony: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b73_J55nIfE&t=17s

So today’s video is less about my experience for the oath ceremony, but more about you -What you should do after your oath ceremony and here are 10 things I think very necessary for you to know after your oath ceremony:

After your Oath Ceremony, what should you do in general?

01. Apply for your US Passport:
This is not required but recommended since you will have a lot of benefits of having a US passport. Travelling without visas to certain countries for example is a good benefit.
Check with your local passport acceptance facilities (libraries, county offices, USPS offices, etc.) for availability
Fill in DS-11 form
Bring 1 passport photo
Bring your checkbook or money order for the processing fee
It should take 2-3 months until you receive your passport
If you pay additional $60, you can get it in about 1 month
Standard fee here in Portland is $145 for a standard passport book
TIPS: Pick a facility that also offers passport photo service. This could save you time.

02. Update Social Security Info:
This step is required
Currently all SS Administration offices don’t allow walk-in appointments
You have to mail in your documents (which include the SS-5 and the original Naturalization Certificate)
TIPS: I would wait until the SS offices allow walk-in appointments. I always hesitate mailing my original documents - especially the citizenship certificate - when things are starting to open up because of vaccination availability, the SS offices might accept walk-in appointments soon.

03.Renounce your old citizenship if applicable:
Please check to see if your old citizenship is allowed to coexist with your new US citizenship. If it isn't, you should take necessary steps to renounce the old one.
If it is allowed, congratulations! US law doesn’t mention dual citizenship. You can keep your old one and the new one.

04. Register to Vote
It is not required but it is your right
Remember what you study from the 100 civic questions about the responsibility and right of becoming a US citizen?

05.Apply GC for relatives?
This process would take some time so it’s good to plan ahead. If you do want to sponsor your parents, for examples, to have GCs, now is the time to do it.

Another big change from getting the citizenship certificate is the name change. What should you do if you changed your name??? So here is tip 06:

06. Please update your state issued ID
This is required
You can apply in-person at your local DMV
One thing to note is that certain states require you to update your social security before being able to update your ID

07. Update your name with your employer
This is fairly obvious
Inform your employer that you changed your name. They can take care of the rest (like update your W2 form for example)

08. Update your travel info
If you travel a lot like me. I have my Global Entry and Precheck TSA available. So if you change your name, please update your travel info with those agencies right away

09. Update your name with utilities companies
Whether it's a phone, electricity, water or internet company, you need to update your name with them. Some states do require you to provide proof of name and address via utility bills.
Update any other accounts with your name change

10. Your bank, auto-home-life insurances, your auto-home mortgages, etc. make sure you update your name with them. The sooner the better because that would save you from headaches later on.

So that’s it - that’s my list of 10 things that you can do right after the ceremony. For me since I don’t change my name, I will follow the first 5 items. I hope this video provides you helpful info and again congratulations if you have just received your citizenship and good luck if you are in the process of applying. As always, thank you for watching and please leave a thumbs up and subscribe to my channel for more content. Cheers!
