Pacifica… 2016: When the Edge of the World Fell Off

For two years, life at 320 Esplanade Avenue in Pacifica gave us a front row seat, an opportunity to witness the beauty and power of the Pacific Ocean, the awesomeness of West Coast sunsets, and a growing awareness of impermanence as we watched small pieces of the cliff out our back door fall away to the beach 100 feet below.

But then the ocean warmed and turned over and El Niño grew in size and power, generating storms of a size and ferocity never seen before to batter the coast of Pacifica. And the cliffs came tumbling down.

We watch now from a distance and with sadness. Our patio, what’s left of it, hangs out over empty space, and soon only the memories will remain. “Red Tagged,” the building will soon cease to exist, demolition debris carried off to some landfill, unless the ocean claims it first.

Have little doubt that global climate change will alter the face of our planet and affect many millions of lives....
