Odessa A’zion has stepped away from her upcoming film Deep Cuts after facing backlash over whitewashing accusations.

The actress was cast as Zoe Gutierrez, a character described in the book as half Mexican and half Jewish. Once fans pointed out the character’s heritage online, criticism quickly went viral.

Odessa later withdrew from the project, saying she hadn’t realized the character was meant to be Latina.

The role has now been recast with Ariela Barer, who praised Odessa for handling the situation with integrity. Odessa also showed public support for Ariela’s casting.
