FA-18 Hornet Insane Features CLOSE UP. Top Gun Pilot Explains.
Thanks to Neil and Jon at Fighterworld at Williamtown Air Force Base in Newcastle, Australia. We got to tour the FA-18 Hornet fighter jet close-up, and check out all its key features and capabilities.
Check my other videos on the Mirage 3 and F-111 close-up tours.
F-111 Tour - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mx2uK0mThn4

Here is what you will learn about the FA-18 Hornet:
M61 Cannon: Located at the front, it can be used for shooting down enemy aircraft or engaging ground targets.
Formation Lights: These emit a dull green glow at night, allowing aircraft flying in close formation to see each other without being detected by hostile aircraft from a distance.
Weapon Markings: Indicate each time the aircraft dropped a weapon.
Undercarriage: Designed for the U.S. Navy, it's sturdy for operations from aircraft carriers. The jet also has folding wingtips to save space on the aircraft carrier deck.
Fuel Tank: Often mistaken for a missile, it carries 2,200 pounds of fuel. It can be jettisoned to improve the aircraft's performance.
Wing Fence: An unusual feature that helps reduce the movement of the vertical tail during high-angle manoeuvres.
Flight Controls: The system is sophisticated and adjusts based on various factors like altitude and airspeed.
Variable Area Nozzle: Adjusts based on the thrust setting selected by the pilot.
Arrestor Hook: Used for landing aboard aircraft carriers, slowing the plane from 250 km/h to a halt in about 300 feet.
Fuel Consumption: The aircraft carries 10,800 pounds of fuel internally, which can be used up in less than half an hour during a dogfight.
Maximum Speed: About Mach 1.8 or 2,000 kilometers an hour.
Weapons: The aircraft is equipped with the ASRAM (Advanced Short Range Air-to-Air Missile), GPS-guided bombs, and an infrared target system.
Countermeasures Dispensers: These release chaff to confuse radar-guided missiles or flares to mislead infrared-guided missiles.
Seating: The F18 Hornet is primarily a single-seater, but there are two-seater versions for training purposes.
The video concludes with the host thanking Neil for the informative tour and encourages viewers to check out the full-size F18 Hornet at William Town Air Force Base in Newcastle, Australia.

Make sure you visit Fighterworld to check out the Hornet, Mirage, and F-111 fighter jets and a whole lot more they have on display.
