Did you play poker before?
So the best poker player is the one who doesn‘t show any emotions in the face. To not reveal his cards in the game. That‘s called a poker face.
Why do we even want to read in people‘s faces?
There are so-called mirror neurons in our brains that constantly scan the person‘s behaviour in front of you. It helps us to understand how to respond emotionally.
So not being able to read someone else‘s face and emotions is hard for humans.
We need orientation otherwise, we are suddenly free and have to fully project our own thoughts, experiences, personalities onto the other.
Exactly this freeing task of projecting your inner self onto someone else is required now by the Box Mates series.
Just like the Poker player, the human face is veiled in the image, in order for the viewer to project himself onto the image.
By this limitation and removal of the human face from the painting, a canvas on the canvas itself is created for the viewer. Julis Goerlich was born on the 3rd of July 2001 in Filderstadt, Germany and studies painting at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp, Belgium.
He was interested in drawing and painting from a young age and tried out different techniques.
When he was fourteen years old, his great grandfather left him his oil colours. After finishing his first painting, he felt like oil painting combined the aspects he liked about painting the most. Intense and bright pigments that don‘t lose their vibrancy, working wet in wet, and from the beginning, he enjoyed the whole painting process.
Very soon, he felt the urge to explore different topics with his painting, and that led him to different collections like eating habits, rap images, and the corona series.
The way he composes a collection is still quite similar to his approach to paintings or projects in general, by asking himself about the biggest concerns and interests in his life at the moment. Illuminating these from different angles and exposing them to the spectator marks his creation process.
An open attitude to life, spontaneous observations and interests like Sociology, Psychology are like a never-ending well for him that fuels his process. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
