Arts & Humanities Dean's Lecture Series featuring Ruth E. Carter

Legendary costume designer Ruth E. Carter, whose career has spanned more than 35 years and 40 films, discussed how she uses costumes to tell stories about race, culture and politics. The winner of an Academy Award for her Afrofuturistic designs in Ryan Coogler’s 2018 blockbuster hit “Black Panther,” Carter was previously nominated for her work in Spike Lee’s “Malcolm X” and Steven Spielberg’s “Amistad.” Carter discussed her research process and shared visual samples of her creations.

The lecture was followed by a Q&A with Scot Reese, a theatre professor in the School of Theatre, Dance, and Performance Studies.
