How Does a Thermocouple Work? Advantages vs a Thermometer

This physics tutorial explains how a thermocouple works and its advantages for reading temperature compared to a traditional liquid-in-glass thermometer.

A thermocouple is an electrical device using two probes made out of different metals. One of the probes is held at a reference temperature - for example, ice at 0 degrees Celsius.

The other connection is the temperature measurement probe.

The temperature difference between the two metals creates an electrical potential difference (voltage) which the electronics in the thermocouple detects.

The greater the temperature difference, the greater the potential difference.
